According to a recent Gartner report,
in 2006, the world's top 10 OEMs purchased one-third of the world's chips. Gartner's report
is entitled "Preliminary Assessment of Top 10 Semiconductor Consumers in the World in 2006".
Ten OEMs purchased chips worth US $84 billion that year, compared with US $77 billion in 2005.
The report shows that HP was still the largest chip consumer in 2006, spending about $12
billion on semiconductor procurement, followed by Nokia and Dell with more than $11.5 billion. Samsung
and Sony ranked in the top five, followed by Motorola, Siemens, Toshiba, LG and Apple.
Alfonso Velosa, research director of Gartner, pointed out that the
strong growth of mobile phone and communication applications contributed to the increase of
semiconductor use. Nokia, Motorola and Siemens are major consumers in this field. Among the top
manufacturers, data processing and telecommunications companies purchased 75% of the chip
products.
Velosa said, "Although
semiconductor consumption continues to be concentrated in top OEMs, the design, sales, ordering and
implementation channels will still be diversified."
